Team India suffered a great loss as their vice-captain Shubman Gill has to miss the fourth T20I clash with South Africa scheduled for December 17 at the Ekana Cricket ground in Lucknow. According to the reports Indian opener hurt his toe while warming up for the match during a training session. The exact extent of the injury has still not been revealed, but the team management is being very cautious and is making sure that he gets the fastest recovery possible and no long-term consequences. This also raises concern ahead of the T20 World Cup which will be starting from February 7 and Shubman Gill needs to be fully fit ahead of the important ICC tournament.
Workload debate reignites after vice-captain sustains second injury
The recent injury of the 25-year-old is very alarming considering his recent medical issues. Just before the neck injury sidelined him for most of the Test series and all the ODI matches during November and December, he had fully come back to the team. In quick succession, the player has suffered a second injury which has raised the issue of the sufficiency of the fitness regime and the management of his workload. He is a heavy burden as he is the captain of India in both the Test and ODI formats.
Who will replace Gill?
Without Gill, it can be assumed that Team India will experiment with the batting order for the remaining matches. Sanju Samson, who is not a permanent player in the team, has been the most significant candidate to take the opener’s place at the top of the order. Hence, this swapping gives Samson an essential opening to secure his position at the front of the queue, particularly as Gill was already experiencing a rough patch with his form prior to this injury problem.
