Sarfaraz Khan has been in excellent form at the domestic level, having scored three half-centuries and a century in 11 Test innings. Despite facing some criticism for a few low scores during India’s home series against New Zealand, his performances, including a notable 150 in the first Test against New Zealand, should have been enough to earn him a shot in Australia.
But despite this Sarfaraz Khan did not get a single chance to play in Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Everyone is left wondering why did India leave such a talented batter on the sidelines.
Competition For A Spot In Middle Order
Sarfaraz Khan could not bag a spot as all the established players were in the lineup. After the first Test when Rohit Sharma came back he batter at number 6 and Rishabh Pant at number 5 which ultimately resulted in the selectors preferring to stick with the experience.

KL Rahul’s Role Shift Impacted Sarfaraz’s Opportunity
Initially, there were discussions about Sarfaraz competing with KL Rahul for a spot in the middle order. However, this scenario changed when Rahul was asked to open in the first Test due to Rohit Sharma’s absence. This shift in role reduced Sarfaraz’s chances of making the playing XI.
Inconsistent Form During Home Series Against New Zealand
Even though Sarfaraz had a fantastic season with the bat and amassed heavily in the domestic circuit, his form against New Zealand at home for India did not impress. He smashed a fabulous 150 in the first Test and then a run of low scores did not really help his case. These mixed signals with an Indian series defeat might have further affected the choices made by the selectors.

Lack Of Experience At International Level
Despite his success at domestic ;evel, Sarfaraz still has minimum experience in the international circuit, which might have gone against him. The selectors might wish to choose a player who has performed in international cricket and is experienced in high-pressure series like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Sarfaraz Khan has proven his potential and capabilities time and then and he should’ve been given an opportunity to prove himself on the big stage.
