The 39-year old off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League. He posted about this decision on X, (formerly Twitter) where he also hinted that he will be playing franchise cricket around the world.
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”
According to a report by Telegraph Sport, Ashwin has “identified the Hundred as a competition in which he would be eager to appear,” If this happens then Ashwin will be the first Indian male cricketer to feature in the tournament.

The BCCI currently does not allow active male Indian cricketers to compete in the overseas franchise leagues. But now that Ashwin has retired from all forms of cricket, Ashwin can join other leagues globally. Ashwin announced his international retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He concluded his Test career with 537 wickets which all places him in the 7th position on the list of highest wicket-takers.
Ashwin was a part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 where the franchise brought him for INR 9.75 crore. He could not leave much impact and had an underwhelming season where he picked 7 wickets in 9 matches. Earlier there were also reports that Ashwin and CSK were all set to part ways for the upcoming IPL season.
