Former India A skipper Priyank Panchal announced his retirement from professional cricket on Monday which marked the end of his 17-year old journey in domestic cricket. At 35, Panchal leaves behind a rich record in First-Class cricket with 8,856 runs which includes 29 centuries and 34 half-centuries to his name.
The Key Figure Behind Gujarat’s Rise In Domestic Cricket
Panchal was the key figure behind Gujarat’s rise in domestic cricket, under his captaincy his team lifted the maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2016-17. He is also the second highest run-getter in FC history and the Gujarat player’s record for most centuries (23) in the format.
A Fitting Final Innings
In what proved to be his last domestic appearance, Panchal gave a performance to remember, making a stunning 148 in the Ranji Trophy 2024–25 semi-final against Kerala. Though his courageous performance was just short of taking Gujarat into the final, the team lost on a narrow first-innings lead.
An Unsung Hero of Indian Domestic Cricket
Even if he never played an international game for India, Priyank Panchal departs the sport with a body of work that will be respected throughout the cricketing world. His work ethic, performances, and leadership were what changed Gujarat’s domestic fortunes, and his name will live on as one of the best to grace the Indian domestic circuit without donning the India jersey. Panchal has never debuted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well, he was picked by Gujarat Titans in 2022 as backup opener but still didn’t get a chance.
“I Realised Its Time Now” Says Panchal
For a long time, it was in my mind that I should retire. Because, when I started playing cricket, there was a driving force that I wanted to play for India. Along with the driving force, there was discipline and dedication. But after a point, I got practical, I didn’t think that it was possible. I tried my best. I mean, I played for India A, and I played in the Ranji Trophy. But I realised it’s time now. It’s not going to happen anymore.
