New Zealand played the first Test against West Indies in Christchurch but the match was drawn as both the teams put up a strong fight. New Zealand was batting first and they set a total of 231 in the first innings with Kane Williamson (52) as their top scorer. The Kiwis were also successful in piling up West Indies innings at the score of 167 with Tagenarine Chanderpaul (52) as their top performer.
Both the teams gave a tough competition in the second innings as New Zealand furthered their lead by 466 runs. Tom Latham (145) and Rachin Ravindra (176) wrecked havoc on field and displayed exceptional batting. West Indies on the other hand put up a strong fight with Shai Hope (140) and Justin Greaves (202) stepping up for the team.

In the second innings, the West Indies were initially reduced to 72/4 leaving them with a steep challenge. But Shai Hope came in and anchored the innings with his fourth Test century while Greaves handled the innings from other end and the duo together put up a partnership of 196 runs.
