Bengal head coach and former India all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla has backed Mohammed Shami and insisted that the veteran pacer doesn’t need anyone’s certificate to validate his class. His remarks come after Shami’s sensational performance in Bengal’s win over Gujarat by 141 runs. The 34-year old pacer picked up 5 wickets for 38 runs and produced a brilliant spell to completely dismantle Gujarat.
“Mohammed Shami doesn’t need a certificate from anyone. He is a certificate in himself. He has the backing of his fans, media, and the biggest selector of them all, who is right up there (God),” Bengal’s head-coach said after the match

Earlier in the match, Shami took three wickets by just giving away 44 runs while Gujarat was batting in the first innings. He took a five-wicket haul and this was his first fifer in the first-class cricket after 2021, when he achieved the feat in a Test against South Africa. This season Shami has been exceptional as he took 15 wickets at an average of 10.46 placing him as the joint third among the leading wicket-takers in Ranji Trophy.

Shami overcame a serious ankle injury that kept him out for almost a year after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Since then he has been playing consistent domestic cricket and last played the Champions Trophy. But after this he wasn’t picked in any of the three formats.
