IPL chairman explains why players like Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma can’t play overseas T20 leagues

IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal ruled out the possibility of the players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma joining other franchise leagues.

One of the major factors that makes IPL different from other T20 leagues around the world is that it is exclusive in terms of Indian players. At present, Indian players are not allowed to play in other international leagues until and unless they are not retired international players. This makes IPL the only league in which players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill get a platform to perform.

“You look at the workload our players have. The BCCI has made a rule for the international players that they must play domestic cricket as well,” Dhumal told journalist Vimal Kumar.

“They have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well. When there is so much cricket in India, and there are so many takers and fans in the country, I don’t think there can be the opportunity (to play in overseas leagues),” Dhumal said.

According to Dhumal, balancing international duties by playing multiple formats makes it even more challenging for the marquee players to commit playing more than one franchise league. He even gave Jasprit Bumrah’s example and mentioned that despite being India’s top pacer, Bumrah needs to be rested to manage his workload.
