Chennai Super Kings (CSK) brought Dewald Brevis in place of injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh in the 2025 season of the IPL. The South African cricketer was picked up for INR 2.2 crore. CSK’s batting order had struggled throughout the season, and with only seven overseas players retained from the auction, the franchise decided to include a middle-order batter instead of a fast bowler in their bid to strengthen their batting bench. The management, however, believed in their bowling unit and hence decided to look for a dynamic batter who could take the innings along towards the middle overs, making Brevis the perfect pick.
Impactful Performances In IPL 2025
Brevis featured in six matches for CSK, scoring 225 runs at a strike rate of 180. CSK’s middle order, which consisted mainly of Indian players such as Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, and Deepak Hooda, could not perform consistently. Brevis’ aggressive style of batting offered much-needed boost that helped stabilise CSK’s lineup.

Will CSK Keep Dewald Brevis For IPL 2026?
Fans are curious to know whether CSK will retain Brevis for the 2026 season. The news appears to be positive. Players who transferred to other franchises after the league restart during cross-border tensions are not retained, a policy exception that spares Brevis from such hiccups. For instance, franchises such as Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings cannot retain some overseas players who were signed after the IPL suspension.
Brevis Crucial Part Of CSK
Brevis’ recently scored a 41-ball hundred in the second T20I against Australia, which also led South Africa to an easy 53-run win, greatly increased his value. His tested talent of cruising through in the shortest form of the game makes him extremely valuable for CSK. Having the opportunity to retain him at a comparatively reasonable price of INR 2.2 crore, the franchise is likely to retain the young batter as an integral member of their team in the future.
