With all the retention of IPL players finalized, understanding RTM, which is short for Right to Match would be very crucial to make an assessment of the upcoming plans that each one of the 10 franchises could implement in the mega auction. RTM card was introduced into the game back in 2014 this further continued ahead of IPL 2018. However, ahead of the 2022 season, the RTM was scrapped. Now that the RTM rule has been brought to spotlight a franchise is allowed to use only three RTM cards during mega auctions.
What Is Right To Match Rule?
The RTM card allows the franchise to buy back that player from their previous side by equating the cost at which that player goes for at auction. Prior to this, in a mega auction, after any player has been sold by the auctioneer, then the rights to buy them back is given to that player’s former franchise and if that franchise chooses it will re-acquire it at the amount at which the final auction was met.
Therefore, another layer of strategy is also incorporated as franchises would now have to strike a balance between holding onto core players with the overall available budget and their auctioning strategy.
How Many RTM Cards Can A Team Use?
Outright retentions can also be used with RTM cards to retain as many as six players off a franchise’s 2024 roster. A team can either choose to retain no one, and then get all six RTM cards through the auction. The opposite will be a franchise retaining all six players, and there will be no RTM cards available for them.
This strategic aspect of the RTM rule is going to hugely sway the way teams approach their retention decisions and shape the look of the upcoming auction. With this, teams have lots to think about in making plans on retention strategies with the intent of maintaining their competitive success in the tournament.
