Fresh from his pivotal contribution in India’s 2025 Champions Trophy victory, KL Rahul is all set for a significant transition in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The experienced batter will be playing in new colors after being picked by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 14 crore in the mega auction following a departure from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). After three disappointing years at LSG—where his strike rate came under fire—Rahul is now trying to reinvent himself in the IPL.
Rahul’s New Role At Middle Order In DC
With the T20 format changing at a lightning pace, Delhi Capitals have apparently made the call to shift Rahul out of the top slot. According to a report in Times of India, the 32-year-old will come in middle order, and Jake Fraser-McGurk, Faf du Plessis, and Abhishek Porel will be entrusted with top-order duties. The new strategy follows after Harry Brook stepped out of the tournament, so DC had no choice but look for a right-handed middle-order batter, an opportunity Rahul has been chosen for.
A Very Crucial Season For KL Rahul
The IPL 2025 season will be a turning point in Rahul’s career. For the first time since 2019, he will not be captaining an IPL team. Having captained Punjab Kings (2020-2021) and LSG (2022-2024), Rahul will now concentrate on his batting alone under the leadership of DC.
Though he has mostly played the opening role since the 2018 season with Punjab Kings, he has played in the middle order too, especially in RCB’s 2016 season, when they made it to the final. Out of 33 IPL innings apart from the opening position, Rahul has scored 500 runs at a rate of 29.41 and a strike rate of 117.92.
