The West Indies side now have a lead of 91 runs with the frustration boiling over in the Indian side. Only one wicket is left but the Indies are in no mood to give up. Both Justin Greaves (35) and Jayden Seales (18) have stitched a good partnership and trying to pile up as many runs as possible.
Shai Hope and John Campbell provided a much-needed boost to the West Indies’ batting effort, both registering half-centuries on what is shaping up to be the team’s most productive day with the bat on this tour. Campbell brought up the first fifty for a West Indian batter during the series, while Hope broke a personal drought by reaching the milestone for the first time in 31 Test innings.
The visitors had a shaky start to their second innings, losing two quick wickets after being dismissed for just 248 in their first attempt – a deficit of 270 runs compared to India’s commanding total of 518/5 declared. Kuldeep Yadav was the chief destroyer for India on Day 3, snaring a five-wicket haul after Ravindra Jadeja had wreaked havoc the previous day.
At Tea on Day 3, West Indies were 35/2 in their second innings, having earlier been 217/8 at Lunch in their first innings before eventually folding. Kuldeep’s spin proved too much for the middle and lower order, wrapping up the tail effectively.
India’s batting dominance had been set up over the first two days, led by a brilliant century from captain Shubman Gill, who continued his strong form in red-ball cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who resumed on Day 2 after reaching triple figures on Day 1, was unfortunately run out for 175 following a mix-up with Gill. Contributions from Nitish Reddy (43) and Dhruv Jurel (44) ensured India posted a massive total before declaring.
As Day 3 drew to a close, West Indies’ hopes rested heavily on the shoulders of Hope and Campbell, who were looking to guide their side to a respectable finish after a disappointing start to the Test.
Seales and Greaves have formed a strong partnership and trying to score as much runs as possible.
After scoring a brilliant century, Shai Hope has been dismissed by Mohammed Siraj.
A Test century at last for Shai Hope - his first in eight long years! After those memorable twin tons against England in 2017, it's been a frustratingly prolonged wait for the elegant right-hander in red-ball cricket. But when the West Indies needed him most, Hope stepped up and delivered - bringing up his third Test hundred at a pivotal moment in the match.
With India having enforced the follow-on, it seemed like the West Indies were staring down the barrel. But what a turnaround it’s been! First John Campbell, and now Hope - back-to-back centuries that have breathed new life into the visitors’ fightback. These gutsy efforts have dragged the West Indies back into the contest and set up an intriguing finish.
Shai Hope nears century and is currently playing at the score of 96.
The West Indies are currently at 253/3 with John Campbell scoring a magnificent century.
West Indies are handling the innings magnificently and India is still not able to get quick breakthrough. The frustration was also visible on Ravindra Jadeja's face as the Indian spinners have been constantly trying to pick a wicket.
John Campbell has been dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja.
John Campbell hit a six and registered a his maiden first class ton.
Bumrah and Jadeja start the day for India on Day 4 in second Test against West Indies. There is a bit of moisture on the surface and India will be looking for an early breakthrough.
Batting at 90, John Campbell is going strong and nearing his Test century at Delhi.
Ravindra Jadeja bowls the first over of the day and West Indies take 4 runs. Hope and Campbell look steady!
India completely dominated in the first two days and the early sessions of Day 3 but tables turned as West Indies showed real fightback - both Shai Hope (66) and John Campbell (87) stabilized the innings and made sure the batting lineup didn't collapse.
“There was a discussion to bat. The last two wickets took longer than we would have hoped for. We felt 275 was a good lead. We thought the wicket would keep deteriorating. But it has slowed down even more. It is challenging to get any pace from the wicket. You have to fire the ball in. And when you fire the ball in, there are less chances of the ball spinning. Campbell and Hope batted beautifully. So we would be back tomorrow and get our plans right and hopefully get into the tail,”
