The light meter comes out and the umpires tell the players to go off. The day couldn't have ended on a better note for India given their position. Extraodinary last-wicket stand this between Akash Deep and Bumrah to get India across that 246-run mark to avoid the follow-on. Rahul set the foundation with some resoluteness and defiance at the top, Jadeja played some beautiful coutner-attacking cricket and gave India a solid chance and then these two took them over that crucial threshold. Now, I know reading all that might make it seem like India have won the game but the importance of them avoiding the follow-on, particularly from the position they were in, cannot be understated.
Day 3 recap: The third day of the ongoing third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane was cut short due to persistent rain. India wrapped up the day at 51/4, with KL Rahul (33*) and captain Rohit Sharma (0*) still at the crease. Earlier, Australia posted a formidable 445 in their first innings, putting India under pressure. The visitors’ top order faltered, losing wickets cheaply and leaving the team in a precarious situation. With six rain interruptions disrupting play throughout the day, officials eventually called it off. India, trailing by 394 runs, still need 246 to avoid the follow-on.
Stay tuned for all the live updates on Day 4 as the action unfolds!
Cummins to Akash Deep, 2 runs, and he's done it again, length delivery on off-stump, Akash Deep gets right behind it and just punches it through mid-off again, not looking to hit it hard, he gets a couple more
Slashed away! Length delivery wide outside off, saw the width and the hands just went after it, it flew away off a thick outside edge and through backward point, totally safe and it just beat the man running across from third man too
No ball, 2 runs, nicely played, pitched up full and outside off, Akash Deep reached out and just steered it through the covers, no ball too as Starc oversteps, handy runs for India
Cummins to Akash Deep, 1 run, Cummins attempts the yorker, offers a full ball on the pads and it's flicked down to long leg for a single
Mitch Starc to Akash Deep: 1 run to the offside
Bumrah hitting pat cummins a six to the third man
no run, Starc shortens the length on off, Akash Deep gets right behind the line in defence
Caught by Mitchell Marsh!! The field was set and RJ has holed out to deep mid-wicket, the follow-on looms for India now.
Four to the third man, the ball lobs over gully, India will take these runs, extra bounce from a length and it caught the shoulder of RJ's bat as he pushed forward, gets lucky and brings the target down to 33 runs
Cummins to Jadeja, no run, short of a good length and just outside off, RJ plays with soft hands and drops it at his feet
A six to long off to Nathon Lyon in the 64th over
Time for Bumrah to beat his own record. Highest runs in a test over.
Caught by Carey. Edged and caught! Siraj can't survive the over - was a full outside off, the length meant Siraj couldn't resist the drive, did so with hard hands, but the ball moves away late, catches the edge and was flying towards 1st slip, but Carey has other dieas,he dives acros, gets both hands and completes a fine tumbling catch. India are 8 down, RJ is fast running out of partners and they're still 45 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.
The players are out in the middle and we're set to resume.. Starc to complete his over, two slips, a gully and a FSL in place, he's coming from round the wicket
Mitchell Starc can't believe it, he's almost protesting to the umpires. I feel you Mitch, it's absolutely infuriating. Nothing any of us can do though. Sit tight, hopefully it's a passing shower. Pick up that book again, scroll social media or make a cup of coffee - pick a pastime of your choosing but do be back quickly, it does look like it'll be a short delay unless they choose to take an early tea.
Siraj was wandering down the crease randomly there! Length delivery angling back into the batter, Siraj backed away trying to defend, thud into the thigh pad and went towards cover, there was no run there and Siraj was well down the wicket
Cummins to Jadeja, 2 runs, they just about make it back for two! Length delivery on middle, seemed to get stuck in the deck a little as Jadeja looked to bunt it into leg-side, just chipped it towards mid-wicket and he called for two straightaway, Siraj was in trouble turning back, he slipped while turning back and had to really scramble, put in a big dive but the bat was in the air
Cummins welcomes Siraj with a bouncer
PAT CUMMINS BOWLED NITISH REDDY AND BREAKS THE JADEJA-REDDY PARTNERSHIP
A much fuller length delivery by Cummins and Nitish Reddy sends the ball to third man but Nathon Lyon does good work in the deep and saves 2 runs for his team
Reddy and Jadeja building up the innings for India
A half-leave from RJ, made a late call to let it go, came off the face of the bat and rolled through point for a single
Mitchell Starc to Nitish Reddy, 1 run, back of a length and angling across the right-hander, Nitish closes the face of the bat and dabs it behind square on the off-side for a run
Seems like continuous rain delays has frustrated the Aussie bowler, banged in short and at the stumps, Nitish ducks under and lets it go
54th over: RJ brings out the sweep, gets right on top of the bounce and places it behind square on the on-side for a run
Jadeja welcomes Lyon with a couple of runs through the covers
Reddy and Jadeja on the crease. Starc in the attack
It has started to rain and the umpires are quick to get the players off. We will continmue to lose overs and the Indian will not mind it one bit. This could be the 7th or 8th rain stoppage during the course of their batting
Reddy scores 1 run to a fuller length delivery angling across the right-hander, Nitish was loking to nudge and closed the face of the bat early, the soft edge rolls wide of cover and he's off for a quick single
Mitchell Starc to Jadeja, 1 run, 50 for RJ, he was brought into this Test mainly for his batting and he hasn't let his team down, brings out the trademark sword celebration, nudged one in front of mid-on and called his partner across for a quick single, his 22nd in Tests
Jadeja welocmes Starc with a four in the 49th over
Jadeja and Nitish Reddy on the crease trying to build the innings
32 overs, 116 runs and 2 wickets in that session. India on the ropes here, trying to score asmanyy runs as possible
Lyon to Nitish Reddy, no run, review lost! Length delivery pushed through a touch quicker and turning down leg, Nitish Reddy pressed back looking to glance it fine, it went through and there was a loud appeal from the keeper and short leg, absolutely nothing on Snicko
Nathan Lyon has sent back KL Rahul
The ball was going straight for a FOUR but brilliant effort by McSweeney.
Ravindra Jadeja (17*) and KL Rahul (77*) bring up much-needed 50runs partnership.
Pat Cummins gives 6 runs off his over. Things are getting steady for India
KL Rahul is batting perfectly.
Its raining again and the play has stopped.
It's time for drinks, India has lost 5 wickets while KL Rahul looks strong he requires a partnership to steady the innings.
Amidst all the chaos, KL Rahul has led from the front and he brings up a stunning fifty in Adelaide.
The poor form seems to continue and Australian skipper Pat Cummins dismisses Rohit Sharma. Last time in Adelaide Pat Cummins had bowled Sharma and now he has edged it and given an easy catch behind the stumps to Alex Carey.
Rohit Sharma- 5*
KL Rahul- 42*
Captain Sharma delivers a good Four off Pat Cummins. This will definitely give him much-needed confidence.
Rohit Sharma dives and survives from getting run out.
KL Rahul hits first FOUR of the day. It was a slightly overpitched outside off ball and KL Rahul beautifully sends it to the boundary.
While commentating Harbhajan Singh said that there are a lot of green patches on the wicket and its still not brown.
