The Indian selectors are likely to meet on Tuesday, August 19 to finalise the squad for upcoming Asia Cup 2025. But there are some big names whose participation remains uncertain in the tournament. Some of the standout performers in the England series were Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj – both are now unlikely to find a spot in the squad despite performing excellently. Apart from him Shreyas Iyer’s position in the squad also remains uncertain.
Uncertainty Looms Over Shreyas Iyer & Mohammed Siraj
According to a report by The Indian Express, Shreyas Iyer is also struggling to find his place and the selectors still have to pick between him, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar and Rinku Singh. According to Cricbuzz, Mohammed Siraj who was the highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is most likely to miss out as Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are in consideration for Asia Cup 2025.
Shreyas Iyer Recent Performance In T20 Format
Shreyas Iyer recently led Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 and in his maiden captaincy stint for Punjab, he helped his team secure a position in the IPL Final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He displayed stellar form throughout the season and scored 604 runs in 17 matches. Iyer last played for India in T20 format against Australia in December 2023. Since then he has been out of the T20Is and with the Asia Cup approaching his place still remains uncertain.
Shubman Gill Unlikely To Find A Place In Asia Cup Squad
Though the official team is likely to come out on August 19, the report notes that several informal meetings have already taken place, discussing how to fit Gill in. Several options were discussed among them, dropping a current opener or a middle-order hitter but none of them favored Gill. Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have impressed in the past year, and the administration is said to be keen on persisting with that opening combination. There were also discussions on replacing Tilak Varma, but that thought was ruled out considering his consistent outings and ICC T20I ranking he’s ranked No. 2 in the world currently.
Another choice that was deliberated on was replacing Gill with Yashasvi Jaiswal, the member from the 2024 T20 World Cup team but a player who didn’t get to play. That option also was turned down with the selectors wanting to keep the left-hander as a third-choice opener in the team.
