New Delhi: Team India survived in five-matches T20 series against the West Indies as Hardik Pandya-led team recorded a seven-wicket win against the host in Guyana in the third T20I on Tuesday.
Suryakumar’s performance
It was an all-round performance from the Men in Blue as they restricted West Indies to 159/5 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav was the star of the match as he scored ferocious 83 runs while, young promising batter Tilak Varma also showed equanimity as he scored 49 runs.
India’s batting highlight
However, India got off to a shaky start as then visitors quickly lost two wickets as both openers were sent off without much concern for the scorer. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his debut in T20 format departed cheaply after scoring just one run in 2 balls. After that Shubman Gill was another big disappointment in the series as he fell for just 6 runs.
Suryakumar-Tilak Varma partnership
Suryakumar Yadav then joined the crease alongside Tilak Varma and steadied the India’s ship. Both stitched together 87 runs stand for the third wicket partnership. Tilak was the main man in the first two matches of the series, but in the third match he played as the supporting role as Suryakumar Yadav hammered West Indies bowler all over the park.

Pep talk with Tilak Varma
After the win, Suryakumar and Tilak got together on BCCI’s official social media platforms for a pep talk where they discussed the match. Suryakumar asked the youngster about his batting style – which reflected calm and composure – and demanded that Tilak handle the situation maturely. “The pitch was quite slow today, so I thought I would take calculated risks. I got loose balls and just waited for the ball, Tilak said of the shot.

During the conversation, the Indian youth also revealed that Suryakumar Yadav was wearing a wristband with a message written on it when he stepped out of the club; “Powerplay me thoda time lekar khelna hai (Give yourself time during Powerplay).” Responding to the comment, Suryakumar let out a laugh and said he didn’t follow his own post then.
“Sometimes you need to bluff yourself. Aaj maine khud ko ullu bana diya (I cheated myself today)! I realized that I was playing according to the demands of the team and not wanting it any other way. I am on the same team and I enjoy batting with the star player (Tilak Varma). I did,” said the 32-year-old hitter, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world in T20I.
India will face another must-win situation in the fourth T20I on Saturday when the teams travel to Florida for the rest of the series.
