Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to be included in the three-match Test series against New Zealand at home, he has been named in the Mumbai squad for the opener two Ranji Trophy matches. Even though Shreyas Iyer had hit a half-century in Irani Cup last week for the winning-Mumbai side but it doesn’t seem to be enough to make the cut.
Sarfaraz Khan Likely To Be Selected In IND Vs NZ Tests
Sarfaraz Khan appears to be set to hold his place in the national side. Iyer was was not picked for the Test team earlier this year after a run of underwhelming performances during the home series against England. With all praise coming in for his successive 80s in the Bangladesh tour during November of last year, he hasn’t been able to regain himself and has managed only 187 runs in 12 innings in seven Tests so far with an average of 17 and no half-centuries too.

Shreyas Iyer’s Inconsistent Form
With that said, his latest form hasn’t exactly helped his cause; he scored only 154 runs for India D in the Duleep Trophy last month-including two fifties and two ducks. He managed another fifty in the Irani Cup but was dismissed for a lowly eight runs in the second innings against Rest of India. With Iyer likely to feature for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, his prospects of being picked for the Test squad against New Zealand seem dim.
Ranji Trophy Another Chance For Shreyas Iyer To Prove Himself
He will still have an opportunity to prove that he has what it takes to join the national squad in this domestic red-ball tournament. Defending champions Mumbai will begin with a away game against Baroda starting October 11, followed by a home match against Maharashtra from October 18, but on the eve of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru on October 16.

A PTI report suggests Sarfaraz Khan, who scored a record-equalling double-century in the Irani Cup with a total of 222 runs, he is likely to retain his place in the India squad for the series against New Zealand. However, Sarfaraz is not included in Mumbai’s Ranji opener against Baroda as, according to sources, he will probably be at the National Cricket Academy.
