India’s veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has finally opened up about his omission from India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Speaking exclusively to News24, Mohammed Shami gave a firm response that hinted about his availability and determination to stay in contention.
India has recently named the Asia Cup squad and this includes five specialist bowlers which includes three pacers with Jasprit Bumrah leading the attack. But Shami still was sidelined from both the main squad and the list of reserves.
The 35-year old made a return to the T20Is earlier this year during the home series against England, which also marked his first appearance in the format since 2022. Even though he went wicketless in the Rajkot game, he made a strong impression in Mumbai and claimed three wickets at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
After Shami’s name was not included in the Asia Cup asquad he gave his opinion and mentioned that no one can be blamed and the decision is taken considering what’s best for the team.
“I don’t blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I’m right for the team, select me; if I’m not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what’s best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I’m granted an opportunity, I’ll give my best. I’m working hard,” Mohammed Shami in conversation with News24
When he was asked, if he was available to play Asia Cup 2025, Shami immediately replied saying “If I can play the Duleep Trophy, then why won’t I be able to play T20 cricket?”
Earlier Mohammed Shami was not even a part of the recently concluded England Test series reportedly due to fitness concerns. Shami also stressed on giving his best whether he is selected or not.

“Right now, I don’t have any hope (about my international return). If they play me, I’ll try to perform and give my 100 percent. Whether they play me or not, that’s not in my hands. If I’m playing the Duleep Trophy, five-day cricket, I’m available for all formats. I was called to Bengaluru, and I have cleared the fitness test (Bronco), and now I’m ready to go back,” Shami added.
