England’s struggle have deepened in the 50-over format as Harry Brook and co. faced a shocking defeat in second ODI as well against South Africa on Friday at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Proteas now have clinched the three-match series with a 2-0 lead and their win marked South Africa’s first ODI win on English soil since 1998.
Following this loss, England’s chances of securing a direct entry in the 2027 World Cup has taken a serious hit. The English men had a dismal campaign in the 2023 World Cup which was held in India, they have only managed to win only 7 out of 21 ODIs. Then the group stage exit in the ICC Champions Trophy this year and a series loss against India have further added to the woes.

Currently, England is ranked at the 8th position in the ICC ODI Rankings, even Afghanistan is ahead by four points and India by 37 points. If results continue to be dismal then England might have to go through the qualification pathway in order to play the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027 will have 14 teams and the event is being hosted by South AFrica, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Both South Africa and Zimbabwe have secured automatic qualification as full-member hosts, Namibia will need to go through the qualifiers. The teams which are ranked in top eight excluding the hosts will gain automatic qualification.
