In the first innings India had set a target of 358 runs with complete batting effort from Yashasvi Jaiswal (58). KL Rahul (46), Sai Sudharsan (61), Rishabh Pant (54), and Shardul Thakur (41). On day 1 of 4th Test, India received a big setback when Rishabh Pant was retired hurt after the ball hit his foot leaving him in immense pain following which he was escorted off the field in a buggy. He was sent for scans to a hospital and the reports highlighted that he has a toe fracture and doctors advised him six weeks of rest. But Pant defied all odds and came to bat in on the second day like a warrior and even scored a half-century.

But England on the other hand were like beasts while batting, they took on every Indian bowler and set a huge total of 669 runs with a lead of 311 runs.
