Champions Trophy: Australia Scripts History After Defeating England, Becomes First Ever To…

Without their frontline bowlers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, Australia had to depend on a less seasoned attack, still, they were able to defend a massive target.

In a record-breaking match of the Champions Trophy, Australia pulled off the biggest successful chase in ICC ODI tournament history, breaking Pakistan’s previous record of 345. England had posted the target of 352 through Ben Duckett’s record-breaking 165 from 143 balls, the largest individual score in Champions Trophy history. But all Duckett’s heroics were in vain as Australia overpowered and won, chasing the target with ease in the 48th over, courtesy of an explosive innings by Josh Inglis.

Inglis’ Maiden Century Guides Australia To Victory

Inglis, made his mark with an unbeaten 120 off 86 balls, guided Australia to the record chase. The game was one where England’s bowlers were found wanting under lights, coping with the dew, and Australia made the most of the relatively flat surface. Inglis partnered Alex Carey, who also made a crucial half-century, to see Australia cross the target with ease.

England’s Early Struggle And Duckett’s Standout Performance

England’s batting order crumbled early, losing two wickets in the powerplay. But Duckett and Joe Root gave a rock-solid 158-run stand to settle the innings. Duckett’s brilliance, which saw a third ODI century, kept hopes alive for England, even if they finally fell short. Although Root (68) and Duckett also chipped in, the side could not speed up after Duckett’s exit, and Australia took the win.

Australia’s Resilience Despite Weakened Pace Attack

Without their frontline bowlers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, Australia had to depend on a less seasoned attack. Still, they were able to defend a massive target with the ball in hand, supported by some quality fielding and significant inputs from Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa. The victory was an important one for the World Cup champions as they showed guts in a match that was poised to go either way.
