The future of Champions Trophy remains uncertain as the International Cricket Council (ICC) still hasn’t released the final schedule. With less than 75 days to go, the competition is likely to be held between February 19- March 9. A proper decision resolution seems to be quite far leaving all the fans, broadcasters and stakeholders frustrated.
Delay In Schedule Announcement
The hopes very high as it was expected that ICC would release the final schedule by December 11 but it is likely to be delayed further which has added to the uncertainty. A virtual meeting was also held on December 7 to address the disagreements, but the still there was no decision.
Growing Pressure On Stakeholders
The ICC is already way behind in fulfilling the contractual commitments to the stakeholders. Now the broadcasters are concerned about the tournament’s marketing. Cricbuzz has also reported that it is likely that tournament can be restructured as a T20 competition. This shorter format will be easily executable and promoted. It will also be done keeping in mind that current audience is more inclined towards T20 and ODIs continue to lose their popularity.
The time is running out and ICC needs to take a step as the pressure is mounting to resolve the stalemate.
Pakistan Likely To Accept Hybrid Model
It is expected that India-Pakistan matches will be held in a hybrid model, Pakistan is set to host 10 matches and the remaining five will be held in a neutral venue that would likely be Dubai.
Backlash From Broadcasters: India’s Matches In Focus
The broadcasters have supported BCCI’s stance and investments are heavily relied on India’s matches. These matches are very important as they generate the highest revenue. The broadcasters have argued that moving out key matches of India will have heavy financial consequences which has put the tournament in limbo.
