India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami might have been overlooked for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but he is all set to make a comeback for the Champions Trophy that will start on February 19. With the tournament fast approaching, Shami is keen to ensure his place in the squad, especially after being overlooked for the Australia tour despite being active in domestic cricket across all formats.
Selectors’ Dilemma Ahead Of Champions Trophy 2025
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is likely to declare India’s squad for the Champions Trophy by January 12, as that is the last date for sending in provisional squads for all the teams participating. With the declaration day nearing, Shami posted a video of his training session along with a very strong message addressed directly to the selectors, declaring himself ready for the challenge ahead.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness Issues
Jasprit Bumrah is reported to be rested for the forthcoming ODI series at home against England. If the fitness issues persist, Bumrah could well be in a race against time to have his overall fitness right, especially ahead of the Champions Trophy. Thus, it goes without saying that Shami’s selection holds much more significance than one might normally give it, as the team management will look to assess his form in the ODI series against England before making a final verdict.

Final Squad Changes Allowed Till February 13
The provisional squad for the Champions Trophy is expected soon, but the ICC has allowed teams to make changes to their squads till February 13. This flexibility may be a deciding factor for Shami’s inclusion in the tournament, based on his performance and the fitness status of other key players like Bumrah.
