David Warner's leadership ban gets lifted

David Warner, who has previously retired from first-class and international limited-overs cricket at the start of the year, has won his bid to have the original sanction overturned, before a review panel. The three-member review panel included Alan Sullivan KC, Jeff Gleeson KC, as well as Jane Seawright, who jointly agreed that David Warner satisfied the threshold to overturn his leadership ban imposed in 2018. The ruling is effective immediately.

Warner Acknowledged Responsibility Of His Actions

“The respectful and contrite tone of Warner’s responses, along with the content, impressed the Review Panel. We unanimously concluded that Warner was sincere in acknowledging responsibility for his actions and expressed extreme remorse for his conduct.” the verdict said

Complete Change In Warner’s Personality

The board lauded him for his transformed personality since the ban was imposed. According to them, his behaviour on the field has transformed for the better since the imposition of the ban.

“Warner’s behaviour has been excellent, and he no longer engages in sledging or provocation of opponents. We are confident Warner will not engage in any similar conduct to that which led to the original sanction.” the panel further stated

David Warner Eligible For Leadership Role

“In 2022, we updated the Code of Conduct to ensure a fair process for reviewing long-term sanctions. I am pleased David chose to have his sanction reviewed and is now eligible for leadership positions in Australian cricket.” Nick Hockley, the Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Australia stated

The panel agreed with the argument that the sanction had “achieved its purpose” in the six and a half years since it was imposed. Cricket Australia did not oppose Warner’s case, and announced that he can lead any Australian cricket competition.
