Babar Azam was handed a golden chance to make a comeback and retain back his spot in the Pakistan team ahead of the T20 World Cup. The former Pakistan captain return turned into a nightmare as he was out for a two-ball duck in the first T20I against South Africa at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
He made his first T20I appearance since December 2024 and walked in to bat at number three spot replacing Sahibzada Farhan. The home crowd roared in support as Babar strode to the crease, needing just nine runs to surpass India’s Rohit Sharma’s record tally of 4,231 T20I runs.

The comeback which was expected to be dashing turned out to be very short-lived. He attempted a flick on a short-of-length delivery towards the leg side and instead the ball caught the outer edge and went straight to Reeza Hendricks at the cover. Pakistan had brought in Babar Azam and rested Fakhar Zaman to prepare for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. This was also Babar Azam’s eighth duck in T20Is as he surpassed Virat Kohli’s tally of seven.

South Africa had set a challenging total of 195 which was led by Reeza Hendricks dashing knock of 60 runs followed by George Linde’s 36 off 22 balls. Pakistan never gained the momentum and eventually lost the match by 55 runs. Now South Africa has 1-0 lead while Pakistan struggles to set the right tone to win the match.
