The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally opened up on the no-handshake controversy following which there are many reports which state that a disciplinary action might be taken against India for refusing hand shake after the match against Pakistan concluded.
The Pakistani team was left out in the open waiting while the Indian batters Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube directly went towards the changing room and shut the door. The left Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha and his squad awkwardly waiting near the Indian area for a handshake that never came. Even during the toss, both the captains didn’t shake hands and went their own way.
According to CricketPakistan.com, the ACC has taken note of the incident and is currently reviewing the footage before and “weighing possible disciplinary action against the Indian team.”
The official statement is still awaited from ACC, but a senior official of BCCI told to PTI that handshakes are customary gesture and not an obligation. Hence, it is likely that the Indian team might not face any sanctions.
“Look, if you read the rule book, there is no specification about shaking hands with the opposition. It is a goodwill gesture and a sort of convention not law that is followed globally across the sporting spectrum,” a senior BCCI official said.
“If there is no law, then the Indian cricket team is not bound to shake hands with an opposition with whom there is a history of strained relationship,” he added.
