In the World Cup Qualifying match, Paraguay defeated Uruguay 2-0. In the 13th minute, Matías Galarza Fonda scored with a header and later it was Julio Enciso’s penalty that wrapped up the match for Paraguay in the 81st. Miguel Almirón guided the plays from the wing and the midfield played an active role in creating chances for Paraguay. Rodrigo Aguirre nearly scored on a header just outside the area in the 70th minute, but the goal didn’t materialise for them. The firm defence and orderly play of Paraguay helped them win and avoid allowing any goals in the game.

Uruguay’s Shortcomings In The Match

Even with several chances from free kicks and corners, Uruguay found it hard to influence the game in the final part of the pitch. Often, their buildup was interrupted by fouls or turnovers and players such as Facundo Pellistri and Nahitan Nández did not manage to create scoring moments due to Paraguay’s strong defence. Nández’s and Aguirre’s attempts to head the ball often failed them, either not reaching the goal or getting blocked by the defence. Defensively, Uruguay’s defence was poor, mostly because a foul by Ronald Araújo in the penalty area gifted Paraguay with their second goal. The central part of Uruguay’s lineup was not unified and Giorgian de Arrascaeta often committed fouls that slowed the team down.

What Uruguay Could Have Done To Win

Uruguay needed to be more focused and accurate when they were close to the opponent’s goal. They recorded several dangerous corners and free kicks, yet bad finishing and judgement stopped them. Focusing more on a clinical passing style from Nanded and Aguirre might have affected the game’s outcome. Even though Rodrigo Zalazar and Brian Rodríguez brought more energy to the field, they arrived too late to make a big difference. It was very important to play disciplined and avoid the kind of foul that Araújo did in the box. If they had used empty spaces on Paraguay’s right, following Cáceres’ booking for example, they might have been more successful.
