New Delhi: India might witness another Commonwealth Games in the nation after 16 years following Australia’s decision to back out from hosting the multi-sport event in 2026, due to rising costs.
As per a report by the Times of India, the Gujarat government is mulling over to bid for the next Games. The consideration began when Australia withdrew its offer to host the 2026 multi-sport event.
Work-in-progress
The report further stated that the Gujarat government initially planned to host the international sport in 2030 in Ahmedabad. The state government was speedily preparing the city for the infrastructure.
The state had even set the target to get the work done by 2028, however, sources told that the work will be done before the 2026 games, which is ahead of its plan to host the next Commonwealth Games.
“Following the development of Victoria pulling out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Gujarat is confident that it will get a nod from the Union government to make a bid for the 2026 Games at Ahmedabad,” the TOI quoted its source.
India hosted the Games in 2010 so far. Later in 2019, it showed interest in hosting either the 2026 or 2030 edition of the multi-sport event.
Earlier in 2019, the Indian Olympic Association secretary general Rajeev Mehta had told a news agency that India had decided to bid for the 2026 or 2030 Commonwealth Games and would also send its contingent to Birmingham for the 2022 Games.
