Cheteshwar Pujara Gets Candid About Sarfaraz Khan’s Test Snub, Says ‘Management Has Doubts About Overseas Success’

Pujara suggested that the selectors may have concerns about Sarfaraz’s ability to perform outside of subcontinental conditions.

Cheteshwar Pujara has weighed in on Sarfaraz Khan’s exclusion from India’s Test squad for the upcoming five-match series against England, set to begin on June 20. Despite his consistent performances in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz was left out of the 18-member squad announced on Saturday. The batter had previously traveled with the Indian team to Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but didn’t get a single game.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Pujara suggested that the selectors may have concerns about Sarfaraz’s ability to perform outside of subcontinental conditions. “The reason he’s not in the squad, I feel, is because he has been highly successful in Indian or Asian conditions,” Pujara said. “The management probably feels he may not do as well in places like England or Australia. There were also some past concerns about his fitness, though I’m not sure about his current fitness levels. He’s been putting in the work, though. At this point, it does seem unfortunate.”

Pujara also mentioned that while Sarfaraz has been knocking on the door, another domestic performer, Karun Nair, also earned his chance. “Karun has been in good form and deserved an opportunity,” he added.

Sarfaraz, who finally broke into India’s Test squad and made his debut earlier against England in February last year, never got a game in the Australia series and was eventually dropped. His omission has sparked debate, especially after he reportedly lost 10 kilograms in preparation for the England tour in hopes of addressing past fitness criticisms.

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar also shared his perspective on the matter, highlighting the harsh realities of international cricket. Speaking To India Today , Gavaskar said, “It’s tough, but that’s what top-level cricket demands. When you get a chance, you’ve got to make it count and secure your spot. Even if you’ve scored a hundred, you can’t carry that into your next innings. You have to start fresh every time and prove yourself again. You can’t give anyone a reason to leave you out.”

Gavaskar’s comments underscore the high expectations and relentless competition that come with wearing the India cap – where talent, consistency, and timing all matter.
