Chess Olympiad 2022: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the World’s best chess tournament at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on July 28 in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin while the matches will begin from July 29 and go on till August 10.

The chess Olympiad is being held in India for the first time. Players from over 180 countries will be participating in the Olympiad with three Indian teams each in the Open and women’s sections.

Chess Olympiad 2022: Here are the details

1,414 players took part in the test tournament an Olympiad special run organized in the city ahead of the prestigious tournament. The Tamil Nadu government has left no stone unturned in the efforts to make the Olympiad a huge success.

A few days ago, AICF president Dr. Sanjay Kapoor was pleased with the proceedings and said, “We appear to be hitting the record books with a regularity, which is far more than what we expected. Our hard work is reaping dividend, first with a world record with 187 countries registering, the highest ever in the history of the Olympiad and today this”.

‘Thambi’, the mascot of the marquee event, can be seen at various places in the city while the iconic Napier Bridge has been painted in black and white colors to resemble a chess board.

Given Modi’s visit, Chennai Police have put in place a five-tier security arrangement and have deployed 22,000 personnel. Flying of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles has been banned in the city limits on July 28 and 29 under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Tamil Nadu Government announces holiday

The Tamil Nadu Government has also announced a holiday for schools, colleges, and other non-essential government offices in four districts for Thursday, July 28, because of the opening day of the Olympiad. The Chennai traffic police have announced diversions in parts of the city on Wednesday and Thursday.

Chief Minister Stalin himself has been at the forefront, supervising the arrangements and visiting the venue to inspect the preparations. India won just one bronze medal in the biennial team competition, in 2014. Then seeded 19th, the Indian team was a surprise podium finisher.

This time, India goes in as a serious contender being seeded second, right behind the US. This is a testament to the country’s growing pool of strong, young grandmasters.

The Indian teams are mentored by five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, led by a bunch of successful coaches and comprising some of the world’s most exciting talent. The team will find themselves at the front and center of attention at home.
