A few days ago, AICF president Dr. Sanjay Kapoor was pleased with the proceedings and said, “We appear to be hitting the record books with a regularity, which is far more than what we expected. Our hard work is reaping dividend, first with a world record with 187 countries registering, the highest ever in the history of the Olympiad and today this”.

Given Modi’s visit, Chennai Police have put in place a five-tier security arrangement and have deployed 22,000 personnel. Flying of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles has been banned in the city limits on July 28 and 29 under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Tamil Nadu Government announces holiday

The Tamil Nadu Government has also announced a holiday for schools, colleges, and other non-essential government offices in four districts for Thursday, July 28, because of the opening day of the Olympiad. The Chennai traffic police have announced diversions in parts of the city on Wednesday and Thursday.

Chief Minister Stalin himself has been at the forefront, supervising the arrangements and visiting the venue to inspect the preparations. India won just one bronze medal in the biennial team competition, in 2014. Then seeded 19th, the Indian team was a surprise podium finisher.

This time, India goes in as a serious contender being seeded second, right behind the US. This is a testament to the country’s growing pool of strong, young grandmasters.

The Indian teams are mentored by five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, led by a bunch of successful coaches and comprising some of the world’s most exciting talent. The team will find themselves at the front and center of attention at home.
