New Delhi: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag removed English center-back Harry Maguire from the captaincy role on Sunday. With his time at Old Trafford seeming interesting to an end, West Ham, Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea were also pondering bids for him.
Bids Pondering for Maguire
Apart from the English club, Saudi Pro League clubs like Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, and Inter Milan also showed interest in the 30-year-old center-back. There was speculation regarding Erik ten Hag wanting to remove Maguire from the role after the England defender’s limited appearances under the Dutchman last season.
Many clubs wanted Maguire on loan in January, but the Red Devils only wanted a clean split and wanted at least £50 million. But now the asking price has come down to £30 million.
Maguire’s club career
Maguire came through the youth system at Sheffield United before graduating to the first team in 2011. He made 166 appearances for United and was the club’s Player of the Year three seasons in succession, also featuring in the PFA Team of the Year for League One as many times.
Maguire at Man United
In August 2019, Maguire joined Manchester United in a transfer worth £80 million, another record transfer fee for a defender. He became an instant starter for the team and was named the club’s captain in January 2020. Maguire played a key role in Manchester United’s third-place finish in the 2019-20 Premier League season and also helped the team reach the final of the Europa League in 2021.
Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag in the 2022-23 season, Maguire lost his starting spot due to his poor form and inconsistencies. However, he won the Carabao Cup in February 2023 when Manchester United beat Newcastle 2-0 in the final.
