Both sides were looking to make a big statement in the competition and so it was no surprise to see the hosts try and force an attacking style of play. However, Arsenal were proving to be incredibly disruptive from the off. Arsenal controlled the opening exchanges and showed their intent with some neat passing movements and constant pressure on the ball. For all of PSV’s efforts, they simply couldn’t match the intensity levels the Gunners were playing at.

Arsenal’s Commanding Performance

Arsenal controlled the match from start to finish and completely dominated PSV. The hosts were extremely dangerous in attack, creating numerous chances and taking advantage of defensive mistakes. Their midfield controlled the tempo and linked up well with the forwards to attack the PSV defense. Arsenal’s quick transitions and sharp finishing made it difficult for PSV to get themselves back into the match, as the home side continued to press. Defensively, Arsenal was compact and composed, allowing PSV very little space to create any meaningful chances.

Was The Outcome Expected?

This result was not really a surprise, as Arsenal were clear favorites going into the game, especially at home. PSV have plenty of quality, but they were simply outplayed by Arsenal’s superior quality and tactical discipline. Going forward, Arsenal’s emphatic win will give them confidence and further strengthens their position in the group. PSV will have to regroup and make adjustments for the return fixture, where they will surely put up more of a fight. The second leg will be vital if they want to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
