Singapore: The elite event of Badminton is set to be help in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, from August 22. A total of 364 athletes from 46 countries have geared up to become the world champions of the game as they walk in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Official Name – Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championship
History – The tournament has the rich history of 45 years as it was first held in 1977 in Sweden by International Badminton. Until 1983, the event was held once in every three years which was later changed to alternative years. Since 2005, it has been happening every year.

Significance – This tournament offers the most ranking points for the shuttler in the BWF ranking circuit. The winners at this tournament are called ‘World Champions’ and awarded with gold medals.

In Men’s Category – China’s Lin Dan has been the most successful in the history of the tournament, having won it 5 times – 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
In Women’s Category – Carolina Marlin from Spain has won the tournament 3 times, in 2014, 2015 and 2018.
