According to CNBC18 Sitharaman has presented eight union budgets under PM Narendra Modi.The Union Government has allocated ₹1000 crore to Khelo India for the financial year 2025-26. This flagship program aims to rejuvenate India’s grassroots sports culture through a comprehensive framework encompassing all sports played across the nation. The initiative’s ultimate goal is to transform India into a prominent sporting powerhouse by developing sports at the foundational level.

The government’s flagship Khelo India programme to scout and nurture athletes at the grassroots level was the biggest beneficiary as the allocation for sports and youth affairs was hiked substantially by Rs 351.98 crore in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Saturday. Overall, the Ministry for Youth Affairs and Sports was designated Rs 3,794.30 crore.

Budget 2024-25

In the Union Budget 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated a significant portion of the total sports ministry budget to the Khel India project, aimed at promoting sports at the grassroots level. Out of the total budget of Rs 3,442.32 crore, ₹900 crore has been earmarked for this initiative. The focus on Khel India reflects the government’s commitment to fostering sporting talent and infrastructure from the grassroots, ensuring greater participation and growth in sports across the country. This funding will be crucial in strengthening India’s sports ecosystem and creating future champions.
