Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene is formally reappointed by the Mumbai Indians to be their head coach in IPL 2025 after finishing bottom for IPL 2024 under Mark Boucher.
Jayawardene’s Future Vision
Speaking about his return, Jayawardene reminisced, “My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, we focused on uniting a talented group to play exceptional cricket, and we succeeded. Now, as I return, I look forward to strengthening the love for MI, building on the owner’s vision, and adding to the rich history of the Mumbai Indians.”

Previous Tenure And Broader Role
Earlier, Jayawardene was the head coach of Mumbai from 2017 to 2022. He had stepped up to a more holistic role in 2022 from the franchise’s global head of performance with responsibilities towards coaching and scouting for all four teams owned by the franchise, which include the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20, MI Cape Town in the SA20, and MI New York in the MLC of the USA.

Akash Ambani, owner of the Mumbai Indians, seemed excited at the return of Jayawardene. After all, he said in a professed tone, “We are delighted to have Mahela back as our head coach. With our global teams now well-established, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always been invaluable to MI.”.
