Previous Tenure And Broader Role

Earlier, Jayawardene was the head coach of Mumbai from 2017 to 2022. He had stepped up to a more holistic role in 2022 from the franchise’s global head of performance with responsibilities towards coaching and scouting for all four teams owned by the franchise, which include the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20, MI Cape Town in the SA20, and MI New York in the MLC of the USA.

Franchise Owner’s Delight

Akash Ambani, owner of the Mumbai Indians, seemed excited at the return of Jayawardene. After all, he said in a professed tone, “We are delighted to have Mahela back as our head coach. With our global teams now well-established, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always been invaluable to MI.”.

Jayawardene’s return is already invigorating hope and fresh strategic direction for Mumbai Indians as they get ready for yet another season of the Indian Premier League.
