Border-Gavaskar Trophy: In the run-up to the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beginning November 22 against Australia, there are growing murmurs over performance in the side that led to a disappointing 0-3 home series loss. Rohit Sharma will lead the team, while Gautam Gambhir will coach the side. India needs to ensure that they change things around on Australian soil.

The Indian management needs to take bold, form-based decisions rather than going by reputation alone. The focus needs to be on the pace attack, and more so, Mohammed Siraj who has not been in good form. In the last four Test games, he has picked up just six wickets; however did not take one even in the second innings. Though Siraj picked 13 wickets across 3 Tests for an impressive showing in his previous tour of Australia, the current malaise only makes him a reasonably fragile choice for the upcoming series.

Prasidh Krishna has shown promising form and could be the solution India needs. He was impressive during the recently played unofficial India A vs Australia A Test series, taking 10 wickets in two games and proving his mettle on Australian pitches. The tall, strong pacer is built for the conditions Down Under, and he could add the much-needed depth to India’s pace attack.

While he is a sharp wicket-taker, Krishna also did contribute with the bat in useful runs in both innings – 14 and 29 – showing he had plenty of grit and fight. And though his runs mattered little to the outcome of the match, what he showed here – the attitude, the determination – are just what India needs in Australia.

With experience in just two Test appearances for India only against South Africa, Krishna’s experience still remains limited, but his recent form and all-round contribution make him a good chance for a position in the playing XI ahead of Siraj. Decisions have to be based on existing form rather than past reputation as India looks to challenge Australia in their backyards.
