Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Former Australia opening batter David Warner has all praises for Nathan McSweeney and is confident that the South Australian to score the most runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India, even though McSweeney has minimal opening experience. He would open alongside Usman Khawaja for the first Test at Perth, having taken on the role abandoned by Steve Smith.
Opening Role For McSweeney
McSweeney had played very little top-order cricket at first-class level – just recently during the India A series in Melbourne. He had made 14 and 25. Nevertheless, Warner believes McSweeney has the technique and patience required to be successful in this challenging role alongside Khawaja, who also started his career lower down the order.
Warner’s Prediction For McSweeney
“I’ve penciled him in to be the highest run-scorer this year,” Warner told reporters, highlighting McSweeney’s patience and compatibility with Khawaja’s playing style. Warner believes their shared patience will be key in stabilizing the opening pair and contributing to the team’s success.

Future Of Australian Cricket: Succession Planning
McSweeney’s arrival comes at 25 in an Australian team comprised largely of players who are near and past 30 years of age. The importance of succession planning was echoed by Warner, with the likes of 37-year-old Khawaja nearing the end of his career. He believes that time needs to be given to younger members like McSweeney to confirm themselves on this day.
Patience With New Talent
Warner conceded others like Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft had their claims, but pleaded with the selectors to be able to afford to be patient with McSweeney. “It’s not just these five Test matches, it’s the signs that you see (McSweeney) as a talented batsman for the future,” Warner explained. He emphasized the need to allow the young batter to grow and insisted that “maybe two summers” is well within the realm to showcase his abilities.
