EXCLUSIVE: For the past few days, uncertainty around Shubman Gill’s fitness had overshadowed India’s preparations for the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. Early reports even suggested that the Indian skipper might skip the match due to the neck injury he suffered in Kolkata. But now, those speculations have been firmly put to rest.
According to News24 Reporter Vaibhav Bhola, Gill is 99.9% set to play the Guwahati Test on November 22. The Indian captain will travel with the team, and doctors have cleared him for air travel, something that was initially a major concern. As of now, he’s not experiencing any pain, which is a huge relief for Indian fans and team management.

Gill didn’t practice on Tuesday in Kolkata, but he’s expected to resume his net sessions once the team reaches Guwahati. His fitness will be reassessed before the match, but signs are overwhelmingly positive. Even in the worst-case scenario, he’s fully expected to be available for the ODI series against South Africa, where he’ll also lead the side.
The neck collar he was seen wearing earlier turned out to be purely precautionary. Medical tests have shown no serious damage, just a minor strain. While there hasn’t been an official update from the Indian team’s physio yet, internal assessments suggest only a 1% chance that Gill might miss the Test.
For now, that’s enough to ease the nerves in the Indian camp. With a series on the line after a tough loss in Kolkata, Gill’s presence at the top will be invaluable as India looks to bounce back strong in Guwahati.
