Ben Stokes Back In Training, Mark Wood Nearing Return In Timely Boost For England Ahead Of Ashes Tour

Ben Stokes resumes training, Mark Wood nears return, boosting England's hopes ahead of the 2025 Ashes series in Australia.

England’s preparations for the highly anticipated Ashes series in Australia later this year have received a major shot in the arm, with captain Ben Stokes resuming training and express pacer Mark Wood edging closer to a long-awaited return to action.

Stokes, who missed the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval in July due to a shoulder injury sustained during the previous match at Old Trafford, is back in the nets and showing promising signs of recovery.

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell, who has had a close eye on Stokes’ rehabilitation, confirmed that the 34-year-old has resumed batting and is steadily working his way back to full fitness.

“Over the last week, he’s started to hit balls and had a really good session,” Campbell told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The batting side of things is going very well, but the bowling will take a lot longer. He is being treated very steadily.”

With the first Ashes Test scheduled for November 21 in Perth, the timing of Stokes’ return could prove crucial. England are desperate to reclaim the urn, and Campbell believes Stokes must be involved in all five Tests if that’s to happen.

“The guy is so good because he makes your batting line-up deep and is a genuine force as a third or fourth seamer,” Campbell added. “He is going to bowl so many overs and can get you wickets.”

Stokes’ dual role as a middle-order batter and seam bowler makes him an invaluable asset in the Australian conditions, where depth and balance often dictate success.

In another welcome development, fast bowler Mark Wood – sidelined since February following knee surgery is on the brink of a return to competitive cricket.

“I’ve got my fingers crossed that Wood plays for us next week,” Campbell said. “If that happens, it’s not only great for Durham but also for England. He is extremely close to playing.”

Wood’s return would add genuine pace to England’s bowling arsenal, something they’ll sorely need on the hard, fast pitches down under. Known for his ability to touch speeds north of 90mph, the 33-year-old has been a consistent threat when fit, and his presence could make a significant impact.

With Stokes on the mend and Wood nearly ready to fire again, England’s Ashes campaign – which just weeks ago looked in jeopardy with injuries and uncertainty is suddenly gathering steam.

The countdown to November 21 in Perth has well and truly begun.
