The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to undergo significant administrative changes with the appointment of new secretary and treasurer positions at its Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled for January 12, 2025.
Devajit Saikia, who has been serving as BCCI’s interim secretary since December 2024, is poised to assume the role permanently. A former first-class cricketer for Assam, Saikia has been the Advocate General of Assam since May 2021 and has served as BCCI’s Joint Secretary since October 2022. He will be appointed as the new BCCI secretary.

The treasurer position will be filled by Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, who represents the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh. Bhatia brings significant experience to the role, having previously served on the BCCI’s Apex Council and Disciplinary Committee.
Reason for Appointment
These vacancies arose following Jay Shah’s move to the International Cricket Council (ICC) as chairman and Ashish Shelar’s appointment as a cabinet minister in Maharashtra. Shah is expected to attend the upcoming SGM as a special invitee.
Both Saikia and Bhatia were the only candidates to file nominations for their respective positions, making their election at the SGM a formality. The transition marks a new chapter in BCCI’s administration while maintaining continuity in its leadership structure.
The succession of Saikia to secretary has created a vacancy for the Joint Secretary position, which will require another election process. The BCCI is expected to announce details about filling this position in due course.
