The BCCI is set to hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai to elect new secretary and treasurer positions, following the departures of Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar. The meeting is anticipated to occur around January 12.
The decision emerged from a virtual BCCI Apex Council meeting held on Thursday evening, called urgently with notices distributed just a day prior. The Apex Council has approved the SGM, with final logistics to be determined by December 20. The meeting requires a 21-day notice period per regulations.
The vacancies arose after Shah’s departure on November 30 to chair the ICC, while Shelar stepped down upon joining Maharashtra’s government under CM Devendra Fadnavis on December 15 – a move which was necessary to abide by the constitutional restrictions on ministers holding BCCI positions.
In the interim, BCCI president Roger Binny appointed joint secretary Devjit Saikia to handle secretarial duties. However, no temporary arrangement has been announced for the treasurer’s responsibilities as of December 19.

The BCCI constitution mandates filling vacant positions within 45 days, making January 15 the deadline for appointing a new secretary. The proposed SGM date aligns with this requirement.
