Currently holding a Grade B contract with an annual salary of Rs 3 crore, the Mumbai batter risks being downgraded to Grade C, which offers significantly less financial security.
The 28-year-old has struggled with back spasms and stiffness following surgery, prompting him to prioritize his fitness by stepping away from the longest format of the game. While this move aims to safeguard his career, cricket experts believe it could have serious repercussions on his standing within Indian cricket.
Former India cricketer and analyst Aakash Chopra has pointed out that by taking this extended break, Shreyas risks losing his place to emerging players who continue to perform consistently. “Whoever plays regularly cements their spot. Shreyas, currently a one-format player mainly in ODIs, could face demotion because he’s not established in Tests or T20Is,” Chopra explained.
Shreyas wasn’t named in the Asia Cup reserves, and his Test prospects are uncertain, especially with competitors like Sarfaraz Khan ahead in the pecking order. This hiatus might allow other middle-order contenders to move ahead, putting pressure on Shreyas to bounce back stronger.
While his health comes first, the cost could be a steep financial and professional setback as BCCI contracts reward availability and performance.
