BAN Vs SA: Aiden Markram Believes Mirpur Victory Will Break South Africa’s Asia Curse!

Markram is optimistic that South Africa's win in Mirpur will finally end their long-standing struggles in Asia cricket.

After ten years and six tours, South Africa finally managed to win their first Test match in the subcontinent. None of the players in the present team has experienced such success, but only five players in the playing XI had played Test cricket in the region before this triumph. Eight out of the 15-man squad members have toured Asia, but none were part of the last successful South African side at Galle back in 2014.

A New Era For South African Cricket

Stand-in captain Aiden Markram views this victory as something of a turning point for an otherwise young and inexperienced group. “It’s special,” he said during the post-match press conference. “To come to the subcontinent and get a win is great for us and the environment. It gives us a taste of what playing cricket here is like, and it excites us for future challenges.”

The win reminds me of the period when South Africa used to smash everyone in the subcontinent. Between 2007 and 2014, they played 15 Tests against Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and UAE, losing only three and winning series against all except India. Australia and England did not have a bright time during these years, with their success rate very much down by comparison.

However, after a 3-0 whitewash in India in 2015, things started going wrong for South Africa. After their last victory in Galle, they had to face another 14 Tests in the subcontinent; they lost ten of them, including 2-0 against Sri Lanka in 2018 and 2-0 against Pakistan last year. Their issues were mostly compounded by their performances against different spinners.

Key Performances In Mirpur

In the latest Test, once again, it was the turn of spin as South Africa walked into the crease to face Taijul Islam. However, it would be those aggressive knocks of Kyle Verreynne, his second Test century, which were to prove match-winning as he termed the innings to be the “best” of his career while battling challenging conditions of heat and humidity as well as long periods of spin bowling.

Markram praised Verreynne as “very good at sweeping,” further pointing out that nearly half of his runs had resulted from this action. “It’s nice to see the guys back their strengths,” he added, rating Verreynne as having spinner’s talent.

Team Dynamics And Future Challenges

Verreynne has already cemented his position as South Africa’s go-to option for a wicketkeeper in the wake of Heinrich Klaasen’s test retirement. Competition for spots, however, is only getting competitive, so captain Temba Bavuma’s possible return from injury may make it complicated for selection.

It was a four-man bowling attack at the Mirpur Test, and with the performance of Kagiso Rabada, South Africa was rejuvenated, taking six wickets in the second innings. Markram acclaimed him as a “superstar,” in terms of his comfort in playing in the subcontinent.

Test Series In The Future: World Test Championship Hopes

With only a handful of Test matches left to play, South Africa is now in the race for a place in the inaugural World Test Championship final. At least four of their remaining five games must come their way to increase their chances. The win has given them much-needed confidence before going back into the subcontinent next year to face Pakistan and India in two key series.

Markram concluded, “The biggest takeaway is the belief and confidence that we can succeed here as a team. This mental strength will help us put together back-to-back performances moving forward.”
