When Pakistan entered the T20 World Cup 2024, warning signs were evident. Lackluster performances against Ireland and England in back-to-back T20I series indicated that Pakistan’s form was far from ideal. Despite their tendency to deliver unexpected surprises, as seen in the 2027 Champions Trophy and the 2022 T20 World Cup, this time was different. Pakistan was stunned by debutants USA in their opening match and then lost to India despite being in a strong position.
In the third game, they defeated Canada, but in their fourth match, Pakistan had a close call against Ireland. While chasing a target of 107, they were seven wickets down before ultimately securing a three-wicket victory.
Babar Azam remained not out with a score of 32 off 34 balls. Indian cricket legend Virender Sehwag commented that if Pakistan’s T20I team gets a new captain, Babar should not be included in the squad.

‘Babar Azam isn’t the type of player who frequently hits sixes. He only goes for sixes when he is well set and facing spinners. I have never seen him use his feet against fast bowlers or hit sixes over the covers; that’s not his style. He plays safe cricket by hitting down the ground, which allows him to consistently score runs, but his strike rate isn’t particularly high,’ Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
‘As a leader, you must consider whether this game benefits your team. If it doesn’t, step aside and let someone capable of hitting big shots in the first six overs and scoring 50-60 runs take your place. This may sound harsh, but if there’s a change in captaincy, Babar should not be part of the T20 team. His performances and strike rate do not meet the demands of modern T20 cricket.’
