As India gets ready to take on the United Arab Emirates in their second Asia Cup 2025 match today in Dubai, there’s a strong chance we’ll see a small but significant change in the lineup – Axar Patel might come in for Shivam Dube.
It’s not a reactionary move, nor is it a knock on Dube’s abilities. In fact, Dube has been solid with both bat and ball in recent outings. But this swap could simply be about horses for courses – and the Dubai Stadium’s conditions may just favour what Axar brings to the table.

Why Axar?
The surface in Dubai has historically helped slower bowlers, especially under lights. Axar, with his stump-to-stump accuracy, economical spells, and lower-order batting, offers a slightly more well-rounded package for these kinds of conditions. He also gives India a second left-arm spin option alongside Varun Chakaravarthy, which can really tie down opposition batters in the middle overs.
Add to that his calmness under pressure and reliable fielding, and you can see why the think-tank might be tempted to give him a go.
Not the End for Dube
That said, this doesn’t mean Shivam Dube is out of favour. He’s had some excellent performances in the lead-up to the tournament and is still very much in India’s plans, especially against teams where his power-hitting and seam bowling can be more impactful.
This could just be a tactical rotation, something we’re likely to see more of as India tests combinations ahead of the knockouts.
All Eyes on the Toss
The final decision will be revealed at the toss – scheduled for 7:30 PM IST, with the match kicking off at 8:00 PM IST at the Dubai Cricket Stadium.
Whether it’s Axar or Dube, India will be going in with a strong XI. But if the pitch does turn, quite literally, expect Axar Patel to get the nod today.
