Gilchrist’s Bold Prediction For T20 World Cup 2024
Gilchrist made a daring prediction that teams like Nepal and the Netherlands could surprise Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He highlighted the impressive growth of the Nepal team under captain Rohit Paudel.
“I think Nepal would be a team that might be able to fire a shot. They’ve got a couple of young players who have been in all the big leagues for a number of years now,” he said.
“The Dutch always seem to ruffle a few feathers, they always seem to get under the skin, and they’re drawn in the same pool as South Africa again. They nailed them in the T20 World Cup last time in Australia in Adelaide. So, it might be the Dutch,” he further said.
T20 World Cup Group D includes Nepal, Netherlands, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. However, Nepal faces a setback with the absence of star leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, who was denied a US visa for the second time.
Gilchrist reminisced about the Netherlands’ surprise victory over South Africa in the 2022 T20 World Cup, recognizing them as formidable opponents. He also praised the USA team for their T20I series win against Bangladesh.
The tournament will commence on June 2 with hosts USA and Canada taking each other on in the opening fixture of the quadrennial tournament.
