Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, who played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the playoffs, will also be taking this break. They are expected to rejoin the squad when it travels to Barbados for the opening group game against Oman on June 5.
“It’s important to be flexible. Guys have been at the IPL. They’ve been playing a lot of cricket so we’ve prioritized giving them a couple of days at home, see their family, refresh and play the long game for this tournament. We’ll get to our 15 eventually but it’s really important that we give them a break, even if it’s [just] a couple of days at home,” Marsh told cricket.com.au.
Aaron Finch, who will captain Australia in a global event for the first time, is confident he can play both warm-up matches as a batter. The tournament kicks off on June 1 with a match between the United States and Canada.
Australia’s first T20 World Cup match is against Oman in Barbados on June 5, followed by Group B games against England, Namibia, and Scotland.
In May, Australia announced their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with key players like Cummins, Starc, Head, Maxwell, and Green expected to play crucial roles. Marsh, who will captain the team in a global event for the first time, expressed confidence in his ability to perform as a batter in the warm-up matches. The absence of some core players for warm-up matches highlights the balancing act between rest and preparation as Australia aims to perform well in the tournament.
