AUS vs ENG, 2nd Test Day 2: Smith-Labuschagne shine as Australia takes 44-runs lead

Day 2 belonged almost entirely to Australia, who looked far more settled with the bat and finished with a handy 44-run lead. But England, despite a frustrating day in the field, aren't entirely out of this yet.

AUS vs ENG 2nd Test, Day-2 Report: Two days into this pink-ball Test at the Gabba, and the script has already swung more times than a Mitchell Starc inswinger. Day 2 belonged almost entirely to Australia, who looked far more settled with the bat and finished with a handy 44-run lead. But England, despite a frustrating day in the field, aren’t entirely out of this yet.

Australia’s Record-Breaking Day With the Bat

Australia piled on 378 runs, the most ever by any team in a single day of a Day-Night Test, beating England’s previous mark of 348 from 2017. It was also the second-highest single-day tally for Australia in an Ashes Test since 1950, only behind the 408 they collected in Perth during the 2006-07 series.

Weatherald kicked things off with his maiden Test fifty, Labuschagne continued his pink-ball love affair, and then Smith and Green put on a partnership that screamed control and class. Carse finally broke through twice in one over, to give England some hope, but by then Australia had already built serious momentum.

England’s Fielding Woes

If there’s a single reason England walked off tonight feeling flat, it’s the dropped chances. Travis Head was put down by Jamie Smith, Alex Carey got a life courtesy of Duckett and Neser survived after Carse couldn’t hang on. Those three misses could easily have changed the entire tone of the day.

Jofra Archer’s Workload

One bright spot for England was Jofra Archer’s effort. He bowled 20 overs, the second-most he has ever bowled in a day, only behind his 23.5-over marathon during the 2019 Ashes at The Oval. He pushed hard, but the edges didn’t come.

What Lies on Day-3

Australia held a 44-run lead. The pitch is still good for batting, and if England can nick out a couple of early wickets tomorrow morning, this contest opens right back up.

The first two days have already given us a heap of drama, momentum shifts, and standout performances. And with the game finely poised, Day 3 promises even more.
