AUS vs IND 1st ODI: Clinical Australia Go 1-0 Up as India’s Winning Streak Ends in Perth

Australia cruised to a 1-0 lead in the ODI series with a dominant win over India in Perth. Early wickets by Hazlewood and Starc rocked India, who managed just 136. Marsh led the chase with an unbeaten 46, ending India’s eight-match winning streak and handing them their first ODI loss of 2025.

Australia vs India 1st ODI Match Result: Australia kicked off the three-match ODI series in style with a convincing win over India in a rain-affected game at the bouncy Optus Stadium in Perth. This was India’s first ODI defeat in 2025, bringing an end to their eight-match winning streak.

Bowlers Set the Tone for Australia

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Australia’s decision paid off almost immediately. Their new-ball pair of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc were right on the money from the start, using the bounce and seam to full effect.

Hazlewood removed Rohit Sharma early, while Starc dismissed Virat Kohli, both cheaply. Shubman Gill was also strangled down the leg side, and India’s top three were back in the hut inside the first nine overs. The pitch offered assistance, but more importantly, the Aussie bowlers remained disciplined.

Despite interruptions from rain, Hazlewood bowled straight through his quota, finishing with outstanding figures of 7-2-22-2, which also included the important wicket of Shreyas Iyer.

Batting Woes for India

India never quite recovered from the early blows. The rain stoppages didn’t help either, breaking any rhythm the batters tried to build. Small contributions from KL Rahul (30) and Axar Patel (32) brought some respectability to the total. In the final over, Nitish Kumar Reddy launched a couple of sixes to push India to 136 in 26 overs.

With the DLS method in play, Australia were set a target of 131 runs, which they chased down comfortably.

Marsh Leads the Chase

Skipper Mitchell Marsh led from the front in the chase, smashing three sixes and two fours in the powerplay. While Travis Head and Matt Short couldn’t stay long at the crease, Marsh found an able partner in Josh Philippe, and together they stitched a 55-run stand.

Marsh slowed down after the aggressive start, showing maturity as he guided his team home. He remained unbeaten on 46, while Renshaw, though a bit scratchy, chipped in with a few boundaries to finish things off with 29 balls to spare.

A Few Stats to Note

  • This was India’s first ODI loss in 2025, and their latest in a calendar year since 1978.
  • Indian captains who lost their first match in charge in all three formats now include Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill.
  • Hazlewood’s spell was one of the most economical and impactful of the match.

Australia’s all-round performance, combined with India’s rustiness and lack of momentum, proved too much on the day. The return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli didn’t go as hoped, and India will now look to regroup quickly ahead of the second ODI.

With two games to go, there’s still everything to play for – but the Aussies have certainly laid down a marker.
