Athlete Shailesh Kumar’s Record-Breaking High Jump Secures Gold at Para Athletics Championship 2025

The 2025 World Para Athletics Championships will take place from September 27 to October 5 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, featuring over 2,200 athletes from 104 countries competing in 186 events. The event serves as a key qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics, highlighting India’s commitment to accessibility and sporting excellence.

The first day of the 2025 Para World Championships in New Delhi kicked off on a high note for India. In the Men’s T42/64 High Jump finals, Shailesh Kumar set a new championship record by clearing 1.91m to win Gold, while his fellow Indian Varun Bhati earned Bronze with a jump of 1.85m. Soon after, Deepthi Jeevanji claimed Silver in the Women’s 400m T20 Final, clocking a season-best 55.16 seconds.

The 25-year-old Shailesh delivered the best performance of his career by clearing 1.91m, breaking both the Championship and Asian records.

Deepthi Jeevanji’s qualification for the finals was a major highlight for the Indian Team. She was able to secure first place in the second heat earlier.

The New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, which will span from September 27 to October 5 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, will feature over 2,200 para-athletes from 104 countries. With 186 medal events, it is the largest Para-Athletics competition in Indian history and a crucial qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics, highlighting India’s dedication to accessibility and sporting excellence.

Asia has hosted the World Championships on four occasions: Doha 2015 in Qatar, Dubai 2019 in the United Arab Emirates, and Kobe 2024 in Japan.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN Stadium) was originally built for the 1982 Asian Games and was later renovated and upgraded to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. With a seating capacity of 60,000, the stadium is maintained by the Sports Authority of India under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
