Asia Cup 2025: Waseem, Sharafu shine as UAE crush Oman by 42 Runs to keep Super-4 hopes alive

Waseem and Sharafu’s stellar fifties help UAE defeat Oman by 42 runs in Asia Cup 2025, keeping Super Four hopes alive.

Abu Dhabi: With their Asia Cup Super Four dreams hanging by a thread, UAE delivered a sharp response against Oman on Monday, riding on match‑winning batting by their skipper and a tight spell of spin from Junaid Siddique to dominate by 42 runs.

Openers Lay the Foundation

Sent in to bat, UAE’s top order turned up just when it mattered. Captain Muhammad Waseem anchored the innings with a solid 69 off 54 balls, his first‑half being cautious and his finish strong – he held it together till the final overs before falling. While Waseem’s knock was full of patience and poise, his opening partner Alishan Sharafu turned up the aggression. After a slightly scratchy start, Sharafu picked up the pace and smashed a brisk 51 off 38 balls, putting pressure on Oman early.

Together, they built a platform that let UAE post a competitive 172 for 5 – something Oman would struggle to chase down.

Siddique Turns the Match

Oman’s reply was looking shaky when Junaid Siddique came into the attack. He didn’t take long to make an impact, claiming 4 wickets for 23 runs, dismantling the heart of Oman’s batting, including two quick blows after spin was introduced. Wickets kept tumbling, and before Oman knew it, they were reeling – 49 for 4 in just 10 overs.

A sharp catch to remove Hassan Nawaz for single digits added insult to injury, making him the sixth wicket of the day. Oman eventually managed 127 for 9, never quite recovering from the middle‑overs spin crisis.

What This Victory Means

With this win, UAE keep their hopes of progressing to the Super Four alive. A victory over Pakistan in their upcoming game could push them through – provided India also do their part against Oman. It’s a classic case of needing all things to align, but UAE have now placed themselves firmly in the conversation.

Feel & Momentum

While specific player quotes weren’t captured, there was a clear sense of resilience and alarm turned into action from UAE. After a shaky opener in the tournament, they’ve shown they can bounce back – Waseem’s experience, Sharafu’s fire, Siddique’s spin – all played their roles.

There’s hunger in the camp. UAE showed on Monday that they’re not here to make up the numbers – they believe they can matter.
